CLEARFIELD, Pa. - Clearfield Fire Department members received 25 new state-of-the-art MSA air packs that cost nearly $150,000, officials said.

Officials said the air packs are powered by rechargeable batteries and have several warning systems to indicate lack of motion, high temperature and air consumption. There are also two other methods to monitor when the air is running low.

"Borough residents can be sure this is an investment in safety and protection for our firefighters and their properties. It is money well spent," said CFD President Debbie Gray.

According to Clearfield Fire Department, the funds were allocated by the department’s Relief Association. It is charged with providing safety equipment. The new air packs have replaced the ones that are at least 15 years old and no longer fit for service, officials said.

Fire Chief Todd Kling called the new equipment a huge leap forward for the department. The safety features are a big deal.

“These units make our old ones look like they came over on the Mayflower," he said.

About two dozen Clearfield Fire Department firefighters have been fitted for their personal face mask, the chief said.

According to the Clearfield fire chief, from the beginning of the year to the end of July, department members participated in more than 850 training hours and responded to 200 calls.

Officials said that everyone is welcome to visit the fire station on East Cherry Street. There, visitors can see a demonstration of the new air packs.
